Castagne out of Euros after double fracture

Belgium defender Timothy Castagne is out of the Euro 2020 tournament after suffering a double fracture in his eye socket during the team’s opening match against Russia on Saturday.

“He’s out,” coach Robert Martinez said after the 3-0 win in St Petersburg.

“Really bad news, sad to see Timothy is going to be out of the tournament. He’s got a double fracture, and now we’ll take the necessary treatment,” Martinez explained.

Castagne was substituted after a head collision with Russia’s Daler Kuzyaev. Defender Jan Vertonghen was also forced off the game early, but his injury is less serious according to Martinez. “Jan Vertonghen has a typical football injury, an ankle knock that we’re going to wait 48 hours to see the extent of, but I don’t expect that to be too serious,” the coach said.

Belgium’s injury list also includes top star Kevin De Bruyne (facial injury) and Axel Witsel (recovering of torn Achilles tendon). Both missed the game against Russia to have “extra time” to fully recover. The Red Devils lead their Group B on goal difference and have the same three points as Finland. Their next game is against Denmark on Thursday.
