Benzema ready to play against Germany
Striker Karim Benzema has said he’s fit to play France’s Euro 2020 opener against Germany on Tuesday.
“Yesterday [Saturday] I resumed team training, I had no pain or discomfort. So I’m 100 per cent ready to play,” he told French TV show Telefoot on Sunday.
Benzema is returning to the national team after six years, but suffered an injury during the friendly game against Bulgaria last Tuesday.
France coach Didier Deschamps is not worried about the striker’s condition. “We have taken the necessary care. We still have two [training] sessions until the match, so it shouldn’t be a problem,” he said. In an interview with German newspaper Welt am Sonntag, Deschamps criticized the high expectations on the world champions”. In France, many people think that we’ve already won the game.
That’s the worst thing for a professional athlete,” the coach said. “We’re the reigning world champions and we’re aware of our strength. But we must not make the mistake of turning self-confidence into arrogance,” he added.
