Arsenal to wait for injury news before deciding on Coutinho

Arsenal’s move for Barcelona star Philippe Coutinho hinges on the player’s recovery from a knee problem, according to reports.

The Brazilian international has struggled for consistency in Catalonia since his transfer from Liverpool in January 2018.

During the recent campaign, the knee injury limited him to just 14 games and three goals in all competitions.

He started the season brightly, registering assists in successive matches and scoring against Sevilla. But his season was ended by a rupture in his knee back in January.

According to football.london, Arsenal remain interested in Coutinho but want a guarantee over his fitness before launching a bid.

They’re confident of bringing the attacking midfielder back to England for far less than the £142million fee Barcelona paid three years ago.

They will monitor his situation and submit an opening offer this summer if he returns to training.

Coutinho is rated highly by manager Mikel Arteta and technical director Edu. His Premier League experience makes him a top candidate to fill their role just behind the striker.

The 29-year-old became one of Liverpool’s best players during his spell at Anfield.

He scored 54 goals in 201 appearances and helped them to finish fourth in the Premier League during 2016/17.

He left the Reds to pursue Champions League glory with Barcelona, but things haven’t worked out for him at the Nou Camp.

Former Gunners defender Nigel Winterburn was recently asked about the prospect of Arsenal signing Coutinho.

He said Arteta should focus on the likes of Emile Smith Rowe and Folarin Balogun in attack.

“I wouldn’t go down that line, we’ve got a lot of young talent coming through.

“Unless he would be on the right wages or if there was a way to fit him in then it could be an option.

“It’s been touted around so much I don’t believe it’ll happen.

“Coutinho was very good at Liverpool, but since then I’ve not been impressed and I’m not convinced by it.”

Due to Coutinho’s situation, Arsenal are continuing to look at other targets in his position.

They’re rumoured to be back in the market for Martin Odegaard, who spent the recent campaign on loan at the Emirates.
