Five substitute option extended until December 2022
Football’s lawmaking body IFAB has decided to extend the five-substitute option until December 31, 2022 due to the ongoing impact of the coronavirus pandemic.
The temporary rule grants competition organizers the option of allowing teams to use up to five substitutes per match instead of the usual three, and applies to national leagues and international competitions.
The extension means the amendment could be valid for the 2022 World Cup in Qatar, set to take place from November 21-December 18. Members of the IFAB board of directors decided to extend the rule, which was introduced in May 2020, during a meeting on Friday. “The temporary amendment is aimed at supporting player welfare, in particular where schedules have been disrupted, often leading to competitions being played in a condensed period,” IFAB said in a statement.
